Rather than get myself in trouble writing about my experiences at the 2011 Calgary Stampede, I'm going to (mostly) let the pictures speak for themselves.
It's not often that you see Kelly Timberman with this look on this face, but he inexplicably won no money and finished last in Pool A.
Pop Evil gave Ryan McConnel all he could handle, but McConnel held on for the day win. Later when he was being interviewed, he said that the altitude on the jumps was a problem because he's scared of heights.
For this picture of Cody Whitney, desperate for a different angle, I knelt beneath a set of bleachers as the fans above dropped peanut shells on me. Anything for the shot though, right?
After being effectively limited to one shooting position for 3 days, I was pretty frustrated and started to pack for an early trip home. But as I looked at the stock draw for Monday's performance, I noticed a couple of my buddy John Growney's horses had made the trip all the way from Red Bluff, so I decided that I'd stay to get some pictures of their Canadian adventure. And an adventure it was, with Kaycee Feild winning on Beaver Fever and Tilden Hooper taking second on Raggedy Ann. Davey Shields Jr. had a wild ride on Red Headed Stepchild, but finished out of the money.
A nice side effect to staying to shoot the Growney Brothers broncs was that the arena was flooded in a storm the night before, everything turned into a muddy version of Slip-N-Slide:
And because my lack of rodeo fashion has come under constant fire this year, I present to you Cody Whitney:
