USC at Stanford

During football season, I always try to shoot as many games as possible,
but I was really dreading the prospect of shooting two games back-to-back,
especially when the first (UCLA at Cal) started at 12:30 and the second
(USC at Stanford) at 5:00, with an hour drive in between. The Cal-UCLA
game was a blowout, so I left after the third quarter and raced down to
Stanford only to get stuck in gridlock. After parking on a residential street
and walking to the stadium, I managed to get onto the field just in time
for the coin toss.

I shot USC last season in the Emerald Bowl, and I remember their
then-freshman quarterback Matt Barkley being a fierce competitor who
played much older than 19. It looked to me like he added some weight,
and even more maturity to his game.

During the first quarter, The sun hovered just above the stands, and gave
me a chance to get some pictures like this one of Barkley getting ready to
launch a deep pass.

I got faked out on the next touchdown, but found a bit of redemption
when Stanford tight end Konrad Reuland (88) celebrated right in front of me.

Stanford kicker Nate Whitaker inexplicably missed the ensuing extra point,
and when USC drove down the field to take a one point lead with time
running out, Stanford needed a lot of yards very quickly.

Taylor stiff armed his way down the field, here victimizing USC linebacker
Chris Galippo to get into Whitaker's field goal range.

Whitaker came on and redeemed himself with the game winning field goal
as time ran out.

As the Stanford players mobbed Whitaker, students stormed the field and
created a huge scrum, which was my cue to get out of the way and send in
some pictures.
