Arizona State at Cal

Cal cornerback Sean Cattouse had a breakout game against Arizona State,
finishing with eight tackles and an interception.

The forecast for the Cal-ASU game was for 80% chance of rain, so it was
rain gear all the way for both me (Helly Hansen Voss) and my cameras
(Think Tank Hydrophobia 300-600 & 70-200.) The rain held off for all
of the first half which kind of felt like a ripoff given all of the protection
involved, but the sky opened up during halftime, and didn't let up.

As with all Cal games this season, it's impossible to know which Bears
team is going to show up. Earlier in the week, Cal head coach Jeff Tedford
shook off his team's poor showing at USC and pledged allegiance to current starting
quarterback Kevin Riley who has looked very shaky.

Riley threw a couple of touchdown passes, but still made it hard to believe
that he is the only option at QB for the Bears. Here Riley takes a sack from
Sun Devils defensive end Junior Onyeali.

I was looking forward to shooting ASU running back Cameron Marshall who
I covered when he played at Valley Christian High School in San Jose. Like
the rest of the Sun Devils, Marshall couldn't really get it going against the
Cal defense.

Cattouse was just everywhere the ball was on defense. Here he drops ASU
wide receiver Gerell Robinson with what looks like a fairly painful tackle.

His pass defense was also solid, deflecting the ball away from ASU wide
receiver Kerry Taylor.

After breaking up a pass on a key third down, Cattouse lost his helmet but
made sure to face the right direction for his celebration.

In a game that featured a blocked punt returned for a touchdown by each
team, this is the best punting picture I managed to make.

Cal running back Shane Vereen had another solid game, opening the second
half with a run through the rain for a touchdown.

Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones made a great play to go up for a pass, make
the catch, and then dive backwards into the end zone for a touchdown.

Cal super-frosh Keenan Allen had a quiet game, but did break a couple of
big plays, here getting past ASU cornerback Osahon Irabor for a nice gain.

Cal wide receiver Jeremy Ross retured this punt to set up his own touchdown,
Cal's last of the day. Note the salty expression on the face of ASU punter
Trevor Hankins who missed a chance to tackle Ross.

Cal ended up winning 50-17 to improve to 4-3 overall an 2-2 in the PAC-10.

After the game, I had just enough time to file, get home for some dry clothes
and get to the Cow Palace for the last night of the Grand National Rodeo.
Look for a post on the rodeo next.
